2024-12-27: EPA Rules and Regulations Revision

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Revises the Secondary Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Standard to include an annual standard of 10 ppb averaged over three years. EPA sets secondary standards to protect the public welfare against adverse effects – including ecological effects such as damage to fisheries and vegetation – caused by certain air pollutants. EPA last reviewed the secondary standards for ecological effects of SOX and N oxides in 2012, and PM in 2013.

The original annual standard, enacted in 1971, of 20 ppb was averaged over a year. In 2010, the previous annual and 24-hour secondary standards were replaced with a 1-hour secondary standard. In 2024, an annual standard was added in again.
