Sound Study
DESCRIPTION:
The sound generated from a gymnasium located on the first floor of a condominium was causing neighbor complaints. Tech was hired to perform a sound measurement analysis. The objective was to assess the issue of potentially intrusive noise resulting from activities within the gym. Tech performed sound measurements in two apartment units following ANSI protocols. The measurements were collected while the gym was in use and also after closing time (no gym equipment was in use). The sound levels that were recorded in both condo units resulted primarily from residential living parameters (refrigerators running, people walking, car doors slamming). The primary gym noise that could be heard was a faint thud from weight machines. Tech's engineer tested each piece of weight equipment and was able to determine that the loudest thud resulted from the heaviest weight stacks being dropped. The mitigation recommended by Tech was to place thick rubber matting beneath the weight machines to help dissipate some of the energy and reduce the loudest thud.
Key Points
- Tech performed a sound monitoring assessment to determine the sound levels generated by a gym, located below two condo units.
- From the collected measurements in the condo units, Tech determined the primary sounds of concern and was able to recommend the placement of thick rubber matting under the machine as a mitigation measure.
