SERVICE:

Air Quality and Noise Analyses

DESCRIPTION:

A proposed project consisting of two 3 - 4 story buildings needed air quality and noise analyses performed as part of Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) Article 80 Project Notification Form (PNF). Tech performed an analysis of existing air quality, an evaluation of potential carbon monoxide (CO) impacts from the parking garage, and a qualitative analysis for intersections in the Project area. From the emissions calculated, Tech was able to verify that the maximum predicted CO concentrations were safely in compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), concluding that the parking garage would not have an adverse impact on air quality. In addition, traffic from the Project would be minor; therefore, a microscale analysis was not required. To demonstrate that the potential noise impacts from the building's exterior mechanical systems would comply with the City of Boston and Massachusetts Noise Regulations, Tech used the Cadna-A 3D modeling program to predict sound level impacts at the four closest receptors. Based off of the calculations, Tech concluded that the sound level impacts would be below City of Boston noise limits. To ensure compliance with the allowed increase from the MassDEP, Tech performed additional calculations with the measured L90 value and the predicted noise impacts. These results verified compliance with the MassDEP noise policy.

Key Points

  • Tech performed air quality and noise analyses to demonstrate compliance with NAAQS, City of Boston noise limits, and the MassDEP noise policy.
  • Tech was able to conclude the proposed project would comply with city and state regulations, and would not cause adverse effects to the community in terms of air quality or noise.
