GHG study of the Walmart in Wareham, MA

SERVICE:

GHG and Mesoscale Air Quality Analysis

DESCRIPTION:

Tech performed a GHG and mesoscale air quality analysis for a proposed shopping complex in Wareham, MA, consisting of a Walmart, a restaurant, and three other retail stores. The analyses were necessary to demonstrate the shopping center's compliance with the State of Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA) “Greenhouse Gas Emissions Policy and Protocol”. This Policy requires a project to a) quantify carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, b) identify measures to avoid, minimize or mitigate such emissions, and c) quantify the effect of proposed mitigation in terms of emissions reduction and energy savings.

Tech Environmental, Inc. (Tech) conducted a mesoscale air quality analysis of the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. The GHG emissions analysis which Tech conducted first established the "Base Case": the carbon emissions that the project would make before any mitigation efforts. This included not only emissions from all the proposed buildings, but also indirect emissions from energy generated offsite (electricity) and the emissions resulting from the projected increase in motor vehicle traffic as a result of the project. Tech then determined the extent to which those carbon emissions would be reduced if the project committed to implementing all feasible mitigation measures. The proponent has committed to total direct and indirect stationary source CO2 emission reductions of 24.0% compared to the Base Case.

Key Points

  • A proposed Walmart and other retail stores needed a GHG and mesoscale air quality analysis to comply with State environmental policy.
  • Tech conducted a GHG and mesoscale air quality analysis that fully complies with the MEPA “GHG Policy and Protocol.”
