Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation

SERVICE:

Odor Control Assessment and Improvements

DESCRIPTION:

The Cape Regency facility expanded its capacity and was required to install an on-site wastewater treatment system because of the new quantity of beds that exceeded the state limits for a standard septic system. The facility installed a packaged membrane biological reactor (or MBR) to treat the wastewater flow. The plant was operating as intended, but unfortunately, the plant was odorous and the odor was seeping into the building.

Tech Environmental's first task was to recommend a corrosion resistant coating for the common wall between the treatment plant and the basement of the facility to limit odor migration. The second task was to recommend short-term ventilation modifications and odor control alternatives. The third task was to recommend and specify permanent solutions to eliminate the odor concern.

Tech found that the detention time in the storage tank upstream of the package plant was rather long, so chemical addition to maintain the wastewater in a fresh state was made. Tech procured the chemical and worked with the facility plumber to install a dose line and with the package plant manufacturer to ensure that the addition would not interfere with treatment or void the warranty on the new plant. Tech also made recommendations for ventilation changed based on dispersion modeling of the wastewater ventilation exhaust stack.

The permanent solution included two options that could be staged. The facility is currently operating as intended with no odor concerns.

Key Points

  • A nursing facility had a wastewater plant that was operating as intended, but unfortunately, the plant was odorous and the odor was seeping into the building.
  • Tech studied the concern and came up with an engineering solution to the problem, and the facility is currently operating with no odor concerns.
