MSW and C&D Transfer Station

SERVICE:

Third-Party Odor Assessment

DESCRIPTION:

A solid waste transfer station located in Devens, an army base converted to a residential, commercial, and industrial community, wanted to accept municipal solid waste in addition to its daily deliveries of construction-and demolition (C&D) waste after the 2008 recession limited new construction projects, and therefore, limited C&D debris.

As follow-up to the site assignment process, the facility was required to perform third party odor assessments at the transfer station to measure odor at the piles, outside of the building, and along the fenceline.  Tech performs these odor assessments quarterly, and was able to demonstrate that the odor emission estimating and odor modeling (performed by Tech and presented as expert testimony during the site assignment hearings) was correct. Tech's assessments have confirmed that there is odor present within the building in close proximity to the piles, little to no increase in odor outside of the facility, and no odor nuisance concerns at the industrial fenceline.
