Light Impact Study for Calais LNG
DESCRIPTION:
Tech Environmental was retained by Woodard & Curran (W&C) to perform a light impact study of the proposed Calais LNG project in Calais, Maine. (In an earlier effort, Tech performed a noise analysis for the project.)
The objectives was to provide a quantitative estimate of nighttime vertical illuminance (the light people would see) from the project site at four receiver locations. The receivers would correspond to locations for which W&C prepared view simulations: downtown Calais, St. Croix Island National Park and two residences near the site. Tech analyzed light trespass effects quantitatively and sky glow effects qualitatively. Predicted vertical illuminance levels were compared to recommended limits.
All predicted light levels were found to be at or below the engineering guideline limits established to protect rural residential areas, National Parks and other areas with intrinsically dark landscapes and urban residential areas. Tech developed a number of mitigation measures, including the design of lights, to ensure mininum light impacts.
Key Points
- Tech was retained by Woodard & Curran (W&C) to perform a light impact study of the proposed Calais LNG project in Calais, Maine.
- Tech demonstrated that the project will not cause obtrusive light on nearby residential properties and at other sensitive areas at night, and developed a number of mitigation measures to ensure mininum light impacts.
