Noise Permitting Compliance
DESCRIPTION:
Tech Environmental conducted a noise study for the Aggregate Industries Swampscott rock quarry to determine compliance with the Massachusetts DEP Noise Policy. Prior to the study, Tech prepared and submitted a sound monitoring protocol to the Swampscott Earth Removal Advisory Committee (ERAC).
Rock quarry operations occur from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tech took continuous sound level measurements at the two closest residential lots to the quarry for an extended period. Tech also collected ambient sound levels measurements on two days when the quarry was not operating. The principal ambient sound sources were airplanes overhead, roadway traffic, commuter trains, intermittent truck loading in the quarry, birds, yard activities, and children playing.
An analysis of octave band levels revealed no instances of pure tones from the quarry. In conclusion, the sound measurements demonstrated that the Aggregate Industries Swampscott quarry complies with the Massachusetts DEP Noise Policy for the entire 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. period of operation.
Key Points
- Aggregate Industries retained Tech to perform a noise study for its Swampscott rock quarry, in order to ensure that quarry operations compiled with relevant permits and restrictions.
- Tech conducted a week-long monitoring study that demonstrated that the quarry operations continue to comply with the Massachusetts DEP Noise Policy.
