Retail Store Indoor Air Quality Assessment
DESCRIPTION:
On one evening in 2002 several employees of a retail store in Wareham, Massachusetts were evaluated at a local hospital emergency room for complaints of nausea, fatigue, and headaches. The store was closed and Tech Environmental was contracted to immediately perform indoor air quality testing to determine if there was an environmental source in the store that could have caused the event.
Tech Environmental conducted an indoor air quality assessment at the store which determined that oxygen levels were adequate and that carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the lower explosive limit (LEL) , and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) would not be expected to pose a concern, and that the store was safe to open and operate. Indications were that carbon monoxide may have been a potential airborne contaminate that caused this specific episode.
Key Points
- Employees of a confidential retail store experienced nausea, fatigue, and headaches during a work shift.
- Tech conducted an extensive IAQ assessment of a confidential retail store to confirm that an episode that resulted in the hospitalization of workers was an isolated incident
