Project Number:
2881Pine Tree Landfill Gas-To-Energy
SERVICE:
Engineering Support for H2S Pretreatment
DESCRIPTION:
Casella Waste Systems operates the Pine Tree Landfill in Hampden, Maine. On May 14, 2007, the company broke ground on the first power plant in the state that converts landfill gas into energy. The 3-megawatt plant now generates enough power to light roughly 3,000 homes for the next 15 years, and also has the potential for other applications, like growing vegetables with waste heat from the turbines, according to an article in the Portland Press-Herald. In addition to providing energy, the paper reported that gas-to-energy plants like the one at Pine Tree can offset greenhouse gas emissions.
Tech Environmental provided extensive consulting services to Casella as they developed the plant at Pine Tree in association with Industry and Energy Associates. Tech's consulting regarded a wide range of concerns, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pretreatment.
