SERVICE:

Biofilter Design/Build and Odor Evaluation

DESCRIPTION:

A Massachusetts facility received multiple odor complaints and was in danger of being shut down by the town. The facility needed a fast-track response program to help it greatly reduce and respond to odor impacts from its operations.

Tech assisted in the design/build of a temporary biofilter to respond to odor conditions. Tech conducted neighborhood odor assessments in the areas surrounding the facility and monitored on-site odor control system performance. This included measuring H2S levels at the inlet and outlets of each biofilter, the wet scrubber, and the three dry scrubbing systems. In addition, airflow and pressures were measured for each of these systems and the results were discussed to maximize system performance. The monitoring activities allow the facility to identify components of its odor control system that may require maintenance, and keeps the facility operating at a high level of efficiency.

Tech documented potential odor conditions and provided immediate neighborhood monitoring. As part of the fast-track response for this project, Tech developed an Errant Odor Action Plan and trained staff on the new air monitoring equipment purchased to help them monitor odor. Areas for plant improvement were discussed with plant management.
