Stop & Shop - Hyde Park, NY

SERVICE:

Noise Consulting Services

DESCRIPTION:

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company needed a sound analysis for a new supermarket in Hyde Park, NY to address concerns regarding noise in the residential area to the rear of the site where loading dock and trucking noise is generated.  Sound monitoring and modeling was required to speed the development of the superstore by shortening the local planning and zoning approval process.

Tech Environmental prepared a sound analysis for the Stop & Shop Supermarket in Hyde Park, NY that demonstrated that with the recommended sound mitigation, the new Supermarket would not create unreasonable sound levels in the nearby residential areas, would comply with the Noise Control Law of the Town of Hyde Park, and would satisfy EPA residential sound guidelines.

Tech conducted baseline sound level monitoring at nearby locations during nighttime periods, representing the property lines and nearest residential uses.  Tech performed acoustic modeling with a sophisticated 3-D acoustic noise model to predict the maximum sound levels from mechanical rooftop equipment, trash compactors, loading docks, and refrigerated trailers at the nearest sensitive receptors.  The predicted sound levels were compared to existing background, average and maximum sound levels, day and night, and future sound levels were compared to the US EPA guidelines.  Tech also modeled the sound level from truck deliveries to the loading docks with the FHWA noise model.  With the results of the analysis showing that the Supermarket would not have an adverse impact on the neighborhood, this development was able to move forward in a timely fashion.

Key Points

  • Tech was asked to proactively assess the noise potential of a proposed supermarket as part of the design process.
  • Tech examined potential noise emitting equipment and made recommendations to minimize noise and demonstrate compliance with noise regulations.
