DESCRIPTION:

A proposed development off of Route 3A in Cohasset, Massachusetts needed a sound analysis to respond to the Town's requirements. Town officials were concerned with the potential sound implications of trucks operating on the access road with a grade in excess of the allowable 6% maximum grade. The sound study included an analysis of truck traffic on a roadway with 6%, 8% and 9% grades.

Tech Environmental performed a noise analysis that demonstrated to local officials that trucks operating on the project access road and warehouse driveway would not make a discernable change in community sound levels. Tech assessed sound levels from onsite truck movements, and specifically studied sound from heavy trucks accessing the elevated warehouse facility. This acoustic analysis involved the following steps: (1) the identification of potential sound sources and operating conditions; (2) the development of sound source terms; (3) the determination of noise sensitive areas; (4) the collecting of field measurements to determine existing acoustic conditions and to calibrate the acoustic model; and (5) the preparation of conservative predictions of maximum sound level impacts at sensitive locations using industry standard acoustic engineering modeling. The results of this noise screening analysis demonstrated that the community sound levels would not be impacted by the development and would continue to be dominated by existing roadway traffic on Route 3A.
