SERVICE:

Air Quality and Noise Impact Analyses

DESCRIPTION:

Tech was asked by the Town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts to recommend air quality and noise impact analyses for a wholesale distribution center. Although the project did not generate enough traffic to qualify for typical air quality analyses, Tech proposed an analysis of the particulate matter emissions from the increased diesel truck traffic associated with the project. A noise impact analysis was also recommended. The Town eventually asked Tech to perform the recommended air and noise studies.

Tech performed an air quality study to consider the effect of diesel emissions from trucks coming to and from the project site, trucks moving and idling on the site, and refrigerated trailers. It was concluded that the proposed BJ's distribution facility would comply with all air quality standards and will not adversely affect public health or community air quality. Acoustic modeling was done to conservatively predict sound levels from project operation, assuming simultaneous operation of all equipment. The predicted maximum sound levels from the facility at the nearest residences was found to comply with the Massachusetts DEP Noise Policy limits for residential areas at night. It was concluded that the proposed BJ's facility will comply with the State noise regulation and will not create a nuisance condition at nearby residential properties. Finally, Tech delivered a presentation to the Uxbridge Planning Board.

Key Points

  • The Town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts required air quality and noise impact analyses for a proposed wholesale distribution center.
  • Tech performed extensive air and noise studies that showed the proposed facility would be in compliance, and gave a presentation to the local Planning Board to that effect.
