Brackett Road Pump Station

SERVICE:

Odor Assessment, Control Advice & Installation Oversight

DESCRIPTION:

The Brackett Road Pump Station was rebuilt with a package inlet chamber, wet well, and drywell design, and the inlet chamber and wet well were only ventilated during worker access. It was not anticipated that the system would require odor control, but fugitive emissions from the system proved to be problematic, which resulted in a considerable number of odor complaints from neighbors living close by. It became clear that odor control was required at this facility, so a detailed study to rationalize odor control was not necessary. Instead, Tech minimized the scope of work to collect only the data necessary to establish basic design considerations. Spot readings for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) were collected at many locations at extremely low concentrations, and a continuous meter was used to capture diurnal spikes in emissions within the closed wet well.

Tech developed a specification for an activated carbon odor control system, proposed the optimal duct layout, and solicited binding quotes from five vendors on behalf of the Town. The preferred vendor, bid package and optional construction estimate was then presented to the Town's wastewater consultants for their review and approval. Tech oversaw the procurement process of the odor control system as well as the installation to ensure a complete and successful installation.

Key Points

  • Fugitive emissions from a package wastewater pump station resulted in a considerable number of odor complaints from nearby neighbors.
  • Tech studied the situation, developed a specification and design, and oversaw the procurement process for an odor control system that solved the odor concern.
