OMYA Ore Mine

SERVICE:

Air Study

DESCRIPTION:

There was a neighborhood concern that there were excessive dust emissions from ore trucks traveling between OMYA's open pit mine in Windham and the Vermont Talc plant in Chester, Vermont. These trucks pass over gravel roads known as Town Roads #9, 3, and 6 in Windham. TSP concentrations at the residential property lines along these roads were estimated. It is important to note that there is a difference between nuisance dust, that can be abundant in a situation like this, and respirable dust, that could pose a health concern at elevated levels. Expert witness testimony on truck traffic impacts was given before the State Environmental Board to diffuse the concern.
